something crazy is happening in our society. yes lots of crazy things but there are some interconnected and i believe interdependent things happening which constitute some sort of FLIP.

when i was younger, a child even, the hallmark of reactionary conservativism (using “reactionary” the old way here, i.e. BACKWARDS) was an unwillingness to listen to other viewpoints. gays aren’t mentally ill you say? ridiculous look at how god is punishing them. “interracial” marriage is ok? ridiculous, the twain shall never meet. there is no god you say? just look around, his hand is everywhere; could a typewrite factory explode and leave the iliad and odyssey BY ACCIDENT? etc

the default setting of right wing culture and movements was OBSCURANTISM. these people just didn’t want to hear it. many of them took their direction solely from a 2000 year old book which has been stepped on by kings and priests so many times it’s like the shittiest cocaine ever: far from the real thing ❄️

it was total mental shutdown, conversation over. will you look into it yourself? NO they would not.

this quality of reactionary or right wing discourse is what both sustained it and drove people away from it. for those on the inside, sustenance was the goal. JOIN OR DIE. believe or go to hell. the way to heaven is clear, and available to all who submit.

for those driven away by that “us and them” vibe it seemed.. YUCKY. hateful. doooooomed.
